During routine operations, Customs Officers conducted examination of cargo which led to the discovery of eighteen (18) packages containing a green plant-like material concealed within a household appliance. Officers from the Preventive Branch were subsequently contacted and responded to the location, where field testing confirmed the substance to be cannabis. The estimated street value of the seizure is $1,413,302.00.

The Customs & Excise Division (C&ED of the Ministry of Finance is pleased to announce the official launch of its Point of Sale (POS) Debit Card (Linx) payment system, which allows customers to make secure, convenient payments directly at Customs offices across Trinidad and Tobago.

The initiative represents a major step in the Division’s ongoing efforts to modernize its operations, enhance customer service, and strengthen the ease of doing business nationwide. The Linx payment option provides both commercial and non-commercial stakeholders with faster, safer and more efficient payment services.

]]> The Trinidad and Tobago Customs and Excise Division, in collaboration with the Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (PATT) with its Cargo Handling Facility The Port of Port of Spain (PPOS) and the Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation Limited (PLIPDECO) hereby advises the national community and shipping stakeholders of coordinated measures that have been implemented to effectively manage vessel traffic operations at the Port of Port of Spain during the period October 22nd to October 30th, 2025.

In the interest of minimizing delays to importers and exporters, both Ports (PPOS and PLIPDECO) and Customs and Excise have been working collaboratively to facilitate the temporary optional redirection and processing of vessels and cargo at the Port of Point Lisas. This measure ensures that Shipping Lines, Agents and Shippers who choose to utilise this option would allow for customers to receive their cargo as anticipated.

It is my distinct honour to stand before you today at this landmark event—the commissioning of state-of-the-art Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) scanners at the Port of Port of Spain. This event confirms the Government’s commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing trade facilitation, and ensuring efficiency in our port operations.

With more than 300,000 containers passing through the Port of Port-of-Spain, the smuggling of illegal items is a significant National Security concern. In response, the Government has taken a proactive approach by acquiring specialized equipment in accordance with the highest international standards to combat this threat.

The procurement process for these new Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) systems to strengthen the Customs & Excise Division’s border security operations began in 2023. This entailed a comprehensive assessment of the required specifications and design of the request for proposals, followed by a rigorous evaluation of proposals from prospective suppliers as well as overseas site visits to assess this highly rated inspection equipment in actual operation at international commercial ports.

]]> The Minister of Finance is pleased to announce the arrival of the first two (2) high/medium energy mobile X-ray scanners in Trinidad on Sunday November 3rd 2024.

In January 2024, the Ministry of Finance signed a contract with Canadian-based Sectus Technologies for the purchase of four (4) high/medium mobile X-ray scanners to be used for inspection of both imports and exports. These scanners, which were built in and shipped from Paris, France allow trained operators to view the contents of loaded trucks, containers and vehicles.  Its high-performance imagining is expected to play a significant role in improving national security by enhancing the capabilities of the Customs and Excise Division in detecting a wide range of contraband items including weapons. Since the scanners use high/medium-energy X-ray to penetrate materials, they can see through walls, containers, or vehicle parts to identify hidden objects that would otherwise be difficult to detect.
